| == Vox ==
| |
| The Vox are a nomadic nitrogen-breathing species with a passing resemblance to Earths vultures or corvids. They are a bio-engineered species who form large flotillas led by an Arkship called Shoals. They have a reputation for being cold hearted and cruel, but also for being skilled and resilient workers.
| |
| | |
| Vox speak Vox-Pidgin, an unpleasant and rhythmic series of screeches and caws.

| == Biology ==
| |
| Vox are an avian species with a similar appearance to vultures and buzzards. They have four sharp talons on their hands and feet, along with a powerful toothed beak.Vox bodies are covered in oily down feathers and they have a crest of brittle quills on their head. They have long tails to help with balance, which leads to Vox having a hunched over and somewhat diminutive stature.
| |
| | |
| Vox have a lot of unique biological features as a result of their artificial creation. Vox are completely anaerobic, oxygen is an incredibly lethal poison to them. They have incredibly efficient stomachs, capable of breaking down plastic, raw meat, and even welding fluid. Rather than a brain, Vox have a bio-mechanical organ called ‘Cortical Stacks’. These esoteric organs allow for Vox to transfer themselves between bodies, leading to effective immortality among Vox in their flotillas. Despite their best efforts no party in the galaxy has been able to replicate this feat other than the Vox.

| === History ===
| |
| Vox history is a mystery to the galaxy at large, and one they don't seem keen on sharing. Their flotillas first arrived in the known parts of space in the early 2390s and have remained there till the current day. To date no official diplomacy has been made with a Shoal, at most deals have been struck with individual ships in the flotilla for trade and-or ransom.
| |
| | |
| In the short time they have been in known space the Vox have had a prolific history of piracy and theft. No recycling process is completely efficient, so to continue the growth of their species and Shoals, Vox flotillas will often choose to take what others have made rather than waste resources gathering and refining materials themselves. This is one of the few ways for a Vox to rise in status, success is rewarded greatly while failure is often a death sentence.
| |
| | |
| === Naming Scheme ===
| |
| Vox are not assigned a name at their ‘birth’, instead they often earn names from their peers. In Vox-pidgin these are often deeply personal and descriptive names unique to each Vox, to those who don’t speak it however it sounds like a bunch of repeating gibberish. A notable example would be Skreskriskriskri of Syndicate High Command. Not all Vox keep this naming scheme, names are often shortened to be more intelligible by other species.

| === The Inviolate ===
| |
| The Shoals follow a philosophical-legal system known as ‘The Inviolate’. The main principles of which state that Vox cannot waste resources, must avoid killing unless absolutely necessary, must preserve their Arkships, and must adapt and grow to all challenges. The exact contents of The Inviolate form a legal code for how to best achieve these axioms, breaking the Inviolate can be grounds for execution.
| |
| | |
| A Vox who follows the Inviolate is expected to waste absolutely nothing, never take for themselves anything they don't need, and to be willing to work for their Shoal until they are not worth the resources it takes for their upkeep.
| |
| | |
| The Inviolates rules about killing do not apply to those outside the Shoal allowing for Vox raids on other species and conflict between different Shoals.
| |
| | |
| == Society ==
| |
| === Government ===
| |
| Vox society revolves around the Shoal and The Inviolate. The Arkship serves as the capital of each Shoal, the leadership of which is expected to ensure The Inviolate is being followed by each ship in their fleet. While exact structure may vary between Shoals, The Inviolate does not allow much room for personal freedoms of Vox. Due to their essential immortality Vox are created for one job and are expected to hold that job forever. Skill is valued, but a Vox assigned to hydroponic work will never be allowed to do anything outside of hydroponic work.
| |
| | |
| The only means of social mobility is to become a raider, and earn resources for their flotilla at the risk of a true death. Vox raiders exist in a separate, but still subservient, sphere from the rest of the Shoal.
